July 21 – New volunteering opportunity in the Gunpowder Mills – the Balsam Bash

As previously announced, a new group called the “Friends of the Gunpowder Mills” is keeping interest levels in the Gunpowder MillsWorks high.  The group will be promoting the historical value of the site but  also promoting its nature and recreational value too.

Chilworth residents, friends and families are invited to join the volunteer team in the Gunpowder Mills on Sunday 21 July between 9am and 2pm, for the annual “bash” to tackle the invasive Himalayan Balsam, a pretty but invasive plant that is threatening to smother the native plants around our waterways.  Easy to pull out, the plant is in danger of taking over the banks of our streams and rivers, and a concerted effort is being made on the River Tillingbourne to control it.

Please give as much or as little time as you have to join the team, supported by the GBC Countryside wardens.  Councillor Graham Brown of St Martha Parish Council is co-ordinating volunteers – please contact him if you’re joining the team, or would like more information.

Many thanks

Graham Brown
