Heritage works use West Lodge as temporary HQ

Walkers in the Gunpowder Works may have been concerned to see a new notice appear on the door of West Lodge, and, separately, a Planning Application notice on the big Green Gates.

St Martha Parish Council with the Community’s support is currently negotiating with GBC to take on West Lodge, rather than see the building sold off for development, and separated from the Gunpowder Mills site for ever.  So, some locals have reported concern, having seen this PAYE sign on the back door of the building.

We can confirm that the temporary use of the building by PAYE has nothing to do with the Planning Application notice that currently shows on the big green gates by West Lodge.

Who are P.A.Y.E.?

We understand that GBC has commissioned this specialist firm to undertake specialist conservation work on elements of the Gunpowder Mills remains.  They will be working in the Gunpowder Mills for several weeks. Installation in West Lodge is a temporary measure whilst they do work on site, and does not affect the negotiations currently under way with GBC for the longer-term retention of West Lodge.

The work is to be welcomed in that it will help to preserve this important scheduled site.

Due to current conditions, please avoid areas where specialists are working;  don’t engage them in conversation, but give them the space and quiet they need for their specialist work.

Update from the Volunteers – CCC is for all!

Carlo’s Trattoria at Newlands Corner offers take-away meals

Full details of what is on offer every day, and the new Easter three course meal, can be found on the website: here’s an extract –

This week I have created an EASTER special 3 course set menu of chilled food to be heated for a minimum of 2 people as well as a new slightly changed list of individual dishes both chilled and frozen to select from and our house wines.  It is still my hope, depending on supplies, to change the set menu each week.  Cooking/reheating instructions will be provided.

Hopefully you will agree that the collection service in our car park went smoothly and that there is no need to change this – as with last week we will ask that you stay in your car and we will bring your order out to you.

Collections are to be made between 11am – 4pm Friday and Saturday and 11am – 2pm Sunday.

So that I can plan ahead all orders for the weekend are to be received by 3pm Thursday 9th by calling 01483 224180 or emailing info@carlostrattoria.com.   Card payments will be taken over the phone the night before your food collection.

Message from Good Neighbours – it’s a success, and it’s working!

April 1st 2020
Thank you so much for all the kind offers of help during this difficult time. Over and above our usual kind group of volunteers at the Care Committee we have received an overwhelming  response of an additional 21 people willing to collect and deliver groceries and prescriptions in and around Chilworth.
Thank you so much. As people are becoming more  aware of our service we have been receiving a steady stream of requests left on our answer phone (01483 538886) for help from 11 people needing shopping and medicines collecting.
Thank you again to everybody.
