Chilworth wants to own its own Village Green and open space. None exists at present, and we think we are the only village in the Tillingbourne Valley not to have this amenity for community use. We have launched an Appeal. Can you help?
The perfect field is situated behind the Village Pub and Chilworth’s C of E Infant School. It is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and links the Village with the Gunpowder Mills, now a Historic Monument. Beyond lie the beautiful Surrey Hills.
This is our one and only chance to secure the field for the community to own and use in perpetuity. It is under real threat from developers.
Our appeal now stands at £45,750 but we will need far more than this. The Diocese is negotiating to purchase the field and will work in partnership with us to allow us to buy the part they don’t need for their own use, which is to secure extra playing fields for the school in the future.
Cheques are being collected and held by David Bunting, Chair, St Martha Parish Council, 01483 561532 12, Halfpenny Close, Chilworth GU4 . Please enclose contact details, including email and phone, with your cheque payable to St Martha Parish Council
Cheques will only be cashed when we are sure we can buy the field
The Parish Council will hold the deeds on behalf of the village and will maintain the field. If we can include a cricket pitch in our Village Green Scheme, we have a local benefactor who will maintain it and we can apply for extra grant aid.
We are doing all we can to get funds. We have applied
- to the Marathon Grant fund (Surrey) for matched funding to buy the field
- to the SurreyCounty Playing Fields Association who are supporting us and approaching other organisations on our behalf
- and will apply to Sports England for help with improving access to the field, setting up the sporting/recreational amenities, footpath, cycle/running track and signage if we include a cricket pitch in our plans/li>
